View of Baccinello, a village of the Tuscan Maremma in the province of Grosseto

Baccinello is a hamlet of the municipality of Scansano, in the province of Grosseto, set in the valley between the Morellino hills and the slopes of Monte Amiata. A former lignite mining village, it entered the history of world palaeontology: its mines yielded the skeleton of Oreopithecus bambolii, the 8-million-year-old fossil primate known as the "Baccinello ape". Today it is a quiet country village, with the Maremma all around and prices that are still affordable.

Wine and olive oil

This is the municipality of Scansano, home of Morellino di Scansano DOCG (at least 85% Sangiovese, DOCG since 1997): the wineries of the denomination are minutes away, along with the olive groves that produce Toscano IGP extra virgin olive oil — the municipality is both a Città del Vino and a Città dell'Olio.

Festivals

The big date is in Scansano: the Festa dell'Uva, on the closing weekends of September, when the historic cellars of the village open to taste Morellino. Village festivals in the surrounding hamlets fill out the summer.
