View of Castell'Azzara, a village of the Tuscan Maremma in the province of Grosseto

Castell'Azzara is a mountain village in the province of Grosseto, on the south-eastern slopes of Monte Amiata, surrounded by woods, footpaths and karst caves: here life still moves at a human pace — the bar where they know your name, shops within walking distance, silence in the evening. Cool summers, clean air, and the slow Tuscany many people are looking for.

At the table

The signature dish carries the name of the village: the tortello castellazzarese, celebrated every year with its own festival. Then polenta (which has a festival of its own too), porcini mushrooms, chestnuts and game. And a treasure hidden in the woods: truffles, both white and black, for which the area around Castell'Azzara is one of the finest grounds on Monte Amiata — celebrated in summer with the Festa del Tartufo.

Wine and olive oil

The village lies along the Strada del Vino Montecucco e dei Sapori d'Amiata: the Montecucco DOC wineries are very close by, along with Castagna del Monte Amiata IGP chestnuts and Tuscan pecorino DOP from the Maremma pastures.

Festivals

Sagra del Tortello Castellazzarese, Festa della Polenta in Piazza Matteotti, Festa del Tartufo d'Estate: the village calendar is a declaration of love to its own cooking.
