View of Gavorrano, a village of the Tuscan Maremma in the province of Grosseto

Gavorrano is a village in the Colline Metallifere hills, in the Tuscan Maremma, province of Grosseto, a few kilometres from the Gulf of Follonica. For a century it was one of the most important mining centres in Europe for pyrite; today that history has become its treasure: the Gavorrano Mining Park is one of the Gateways to the Tuscan Mining UNESCO Global Geopark, with the Museum in the Tunnel carved into the mine and the striking Teatro delle Rocce, an amphitheatre built into a former quarry where concerts and performances are held in summer.

At the table

Maremma cooking between hills and sea: tortelli, acquacotta, wild boar, pecorino, and fish from the nearby coast. In the hamlet of Grilli, the Sagra del Tortello e del Maccherone Maremmano is an institution; in Caldana, in autumn, the Festa d'Autunno.

Wine and olive oil

The Gavorrano area falls within the Monteregio di Massa Marittima DOC zone: Sangiovese and Vermentino from the Colline Metallifere, along the Strada del Vino Monteregio. The olive groves produce Toscano IGP extra virgin olive oil.

Festivals

Beyond the hamlet festivals, summer brings performances at the Teatro delle Rocce and evening visits to the mining park: a rare way to experience the village.
