View of Monte Amiata from Montelaterone, a medieval village in the Tuscan Maremma, province of Grosseto

Montelaterone is a medieval hilltop village set at around 670 metres on the western slopes of Monte Amiata, in the Tuscan Maremma, province of Grosseto. It was founded in the early 11th century by the Abbey of San Salvatore, which enclosed it within a double ring of walls. The village is still best explored on foot, through stone lanes, stairways and vaulted passages winding across several levels. At the foot of the hill stands the Pieve di Santa Maria ad Lamulas, one of the finest Romanesque churches in southern Tuscany. A quiet, genuine place surrounded by chestnut woods, just minutes from Arcidosso and Castel del Piano.

At the table

Amiata cooking is mountain and forest food: acquacotta soup, pici pasta with meat sauce, tortelli, chestnut polenta, porcini mushrooms in autumn, wild boar and game. The signature dessert is castagnaccio, made with flour from the Monte Amiata PGI chestnut.

Wine and olive oil

Montelaterone lies within the Montecucco wine area, home of Sangiovese and elegant reds, just a short drive from the great wines of Montalcino. The olive oil is typical of Amiata, linked to the local olivastra seggianese variety: fragrant, fruity and hardy enough for mountain winters.

Festivals
