The village whose castle was painted by Simone Martini in the Palazzo Pubblico of Siena.

Montemassi is a village in the municipality of Roccastrada, in the Tuscan Maremma, province of Grosseto, dominated by its castle: the one from the siege of 1328 immortalised in the celebrated fresco "Guidoriccio da Fogliano at the siege of Montemassi" in the Palazzo Pubblico of Siena, traditionally attributed to Simone Martini. A tiny village with a place in the art history books, looking out over the Maremma plain.

This is the Monteregio di Massa Marittima DOC area — the municipality of Roccastrada falls within the denomination — and Toscano IGP extra virgin olive oil country: the countryside between Montemassi and Tatti is a sweep of olive trees and vines.

Festivals

Village life follows the calendar of summer festivals below the castle, while the big events of the municipality are minutes away: the Palio dei Ciuchi and Medioevo nel Borgo in Roccatederighi in August, the Festa dell'Aia in Roccastrada in July.
