Fresh air at 600 metres, autumn chestnuts and the sea in 38 minutes.

Sassofortino is a village in the municipality of Roccastrada, in the Tuscan Maremma, province of Grosseto, lying at around 600 metres on the slopes of Monte Sassoforte, among chestnut woods. The altitude brings cool summers — an increasingly precious luxury — while the sea at Follonica is only 38 minutes away. The village has a welcoming community and the essentials: bakery, shops, restaurants.

At the table

The cooking is that of the Maremma hills: tortelli, maccheroni with wild boar sauce, acquacotta, pecorino, cured meats and, in autumn, chestnuts and mushrooms from the Sassoforte woods.

Wine and olive oil

This is the municipality of Roccastrada, land of Monteregio di Massa Marittima DOC and of Toscano IGP extra virgin olive oil: the hills below the village are dotted with olive groves, and many houses still have their own patch of them.

Festivals

Two fixed dates tell the story of the village: in August the Sagra del Maccherone, when the streets fill with long tables, and between October and November the Festa della Castagna, devoted to the fruit of the woods that surround Sassofortino.
