Scansano

The home of Morellino di Scansano DOCG, the great red of the Maremma.

Scansano is the wine village par excellence of the Tuscan Maremma, in the province of Grosseto: set at 500 metres among hills of vines and olive groves, with the sea on the horizon on clear days. Its name is bound forever to Morellino, the red that carried the Maremma into the world. The historic centre is a maze of alleyways, arches and cellars cut into the stone, and the village — a Città del Vino and Città dell'Olio — lives by the vineyard, the olive mill and hospitality.

Wine and olive oil

Morellino di Scansano DOCG — at least 85% Sangiovese, DOCG since 1997 — is one of the great Tuscan reds: there are dozens of wineries, from small family estates to well-known names. The olive groves of the Scansano hills produce one of the most highly regarded Toscano IGP extra virgin olive oils in the province.

Festivals

On the closing weekends of September the Festa dell'Uva celebrates the harvest: the historic cellars of the centre open up, the alleyways fill with tastings, music and local dishes — the most eagerly awaited event of the year in the home of Morellino.
