Scarlino

The village with its fortress above the Gulf of Follonica, between Cala Violina and the olive groves.

Scarlino is a medieval village perched on a hill overlooking the Gulf of Follonica, in the Tuscan Maremma, province of Grosseto. The Rocca Pisana at the top of the village offers one of the finest views on the coast; below, the Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve guards Cala Violina, one of the most famous and unspoilt beaches in Tuscany, reachable only on foot or by bike. The marina at Puntone completes an area that brings together village, woodland and sea.

At the table

A double soul: fish from the gulf and cooking from the hills — tortelli, wild boar, pecorino. The tastiest date is the Sagra della Rosticciana e della Salsiccia in Scarlino Scalo, a festival of embers and good company.

Wine and olive oil

The Scarlino area falls within the Monteregio di Massa Marittima DOC zone, and the hills around the village are a sweep of centuries-old olive groves: Toscano IGP extra virgin olive oil is one of the things the village is known for.

Festivals

In August the village comes alive with medieval re-enactments around the fortress; in Scarlino Scalo the sagra brings rosticciana and sausage to the table; and all year round the Bandite Reserve is the playground of walkers and cyclists.
