Stone, woods and slow rhythms on the border between the Maremma and the Siena hills.

Torniella is a small village in the municipality of Roccastrada, in the Tuscan Maremma, province of Grosseto, grown up around the old walls of its castle, on the boundary with the Colline Metallifere and the province of Siena. With the neighbouring hamlet of Piloni it shares woods, silence and an authentic village life, with shops and restaurants on a community scale. It is the place for anyone looking for the Tuscany that doesn't perform: the one that simply lives.

At the table

Woodland cooking and tradition: tortelli maremmani, pappardelle with hare, wild boar, mushrooms and chestnuts in autumn, pecorino from the hills. In the village restaurants the recipes are the families' own.

Wine and olive oil

The municipality of Roccastrada is the land of Monteregio di Massa Marittima DOC and of Toscano IGP extra virgin olive oil: from the surrounding hills come the Sangiovese-based red and the oil with its typical Maremma bitter finish.

Festivals

Village life comes alive with the local traditional festivals and with the big events of the municipality: the Festa dell'Aia in Roccastrada in July and, in August, the Palio dei Ciuchi and Medioevo nel Borgo in Roccatederighi.
