Grosseto

The capital of the Maremma, inside the Medici walls, 12 km from the sea.

Grosseto is the main town of the Tuscan Maremma: a city on a human scale, enclosed within a perfect hexagon of sixteenth-century Medici walls, still intact and walkable or cyclable, with its cathedral, its museums and comfortable everyday life — hospital, station, schools, shops. The sea at Marina di Grosseto is 12 km away, and the Maremma Regional Park begins on the city's doorstep.

At the table

The city is the gastronomic capital of the province: long-established trattorias and young restaurants serve tortelli maremmani, acquacotta, wild boar, Maremmana beef tartare, pecorino and fish from the nearby coast. The weekly market and the shops in the centre bring together produce from across the province.

Wine and olive oil

Grosseto is the heart of the Maremma Toscana DOC denomination and the crossroads of the province's great wine areas: Morellino di Scansano DOCG to the south-east, Monteregio to the north, Montecucco towards Monte Amiata. Around the city, olive groves stretch as far as the eye can see for Toscano IGP extra virgin olive oil.

Festivals

The city calendar is full all year round, between Piazza Dante, the walls and the Maremma Park; and from Grosseto every festival in the province is less than an hour away: it is the perfect base camp for living the Maremma.
