Roccastrada

Roccastrada is a village of medieval origin perched on a trachyte crag between the Grosseto Maremma and the Colline Metallifere, in the province of Grosseto. The main town of a municipality that takes in villages such as Roccatederighi, Sassofortino, Torniella and Ribolla, it is alive all year round: schools, shops, a weekly market, services — and views that run from the historic centre all the way to Monte Amiata.

This is where you eat the real Maremma: tortelli maremmani, acquacotta, pappardelle with hare, wild boar with olives, fresh and aged pecorino, pork and wild boar cured meats. And in autumn chestnuts, mushrooms and bruschetta with the new oil.

Wine and olive oil

The municipal area falls within the Monteregio di Massa Marittima DOC zone (recognised in 1994), based on Sangiovese and Vermentino. Roccastrada is a stop on the Strada del Vino Monteregio and is home to the Museum of the Vine and Wine, devoted to the winemaking tradition of the Colline Metallifere. The surrounding hills produce Toscano IGP extra virgin olive oil.

Festivals

In July the Festa dell'Aia celebrates the threshing of times past, ending with the children storming the haystack. And a short distance away, in August, the Palio dei Ciuchi and Medioevo nel Borgo in Roccatederighi.
